JOB OPENING: AMBER Project Manager
Main Purpose of the Post
A Project Manager (PM) is required to manage AMBER (Adaptive Management of Barriers in European Rivers), a EU Horizon 2020 project which includes 19 other partners, with Swansea University as the lead. The objectives of AMBER are (i) to create a comprehensive European-wide Atlas of barriers (e.g. dams) and their passability for biota, (ii) to develop guidance on placement, removal and management of barriers to optimise connectivity in rivers whilst not being prejudicial to socio-economic development and taking into account stakeholder conflict. The output is likely to feed into the review of the Water Framework Directive in 2020.
Main Duties
The AMBER PM will be expected to:
Ensure that the project tasks are carried out adequately and in a coordinated manner
Ensure that deliverables are on target and submitted in a timely fashion and that they are fit for purpose
Ensure that milestones are achieved by the consortium
Ensure that there is an efficient, friendly and effective communication among beneficiaries and within the management structure (Management, Work Package leaders, External Advisory Board and EC Project Officers)
Keep track and help resolve problems relating to potential conflicts of interest within the consortium
Organise meetings, and liaise with EC Officers, Work Package Leaders and beneficiaries
Ensure budgetary oversight and maintain financial clarity across the project
Support the Project Coordinator (Prof. Carlos Garcia de Leaniz) in the delivery of the project
Any other duties as directed by the Project Coordinator expected within the grade definition.

Qualifications
BSc or BA in Biology, Geography, the Life Sciences or related disciplines, or equivalent working experience. Either holds a project management qualification e.g. APMP, PRINCE2, etc. or is willing to work towards an Association for Project Management (APM) qualification. Member of a recognised professional body or willingness to work towards APM membership.
Experience
Experience in managing and monitoring project finances to ensure that the project is delivered within budget and achieves value for money
Experience in managing and monitoring project plan to ensure successful completion of activities to achieve the required quality, timescales and budget targets
Experience of identifying risks and planning, implementing and monitoring responses
Experience of managing governance structures for a complex project, including defining clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities
Experience of procuring goods or services, monitoring compliance and managing variances
Managing teams and projects at a distance
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously, and to organise and prioritise own work and that of others in order to meet project milestones
Excellent communication skills with clear evidence of effective presentation skills, report-writing and editing skills, and the ability to converse authoritatively and persuasively with a range of stakeholders at all levels
Broad knowledge of project management procedures and an ability to deploy and customise procedures for an individual project
Experience using flexible project management processes and planning tool such as MS Project
Desirable Criteria
Three years’ experience managing international projects
Ability to communicate in Welsh
Experience working on areas related to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD)
Experience working and dealing with stakeholders in a Higher Education environment
Willingness to travel to meet beneficiaries and stakeholders at different locations within Europe
Knowledge of European funding rules, controls and communications (particularly H2020 grants and the H2020 portal)
Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional career development
