AMBER barrier identification guide

Which river barrier is this?

Answer a few simple questions about what you see in the river and we'll tell you what type of barrier it is — longitudinal or lateral.

Longitudinal barriers cut across the river channel and interrupt the flow of water, sediment and fish along the river. Some hold water back and create a pond upstream (ponding); others don't (non-ponding).

Lateral barriers run along the river's edge and separate the channel from its banks and floodplain. Some protect the bank from erosion (bank stabilisation); others keep flood water in (flood control).
